GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- It took the No. 2 Tigers a little time to get in a rhythm, but when they did, they took off for a 51-17 win over No. 31 Chatfield in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
GJHS (10-0) fell behind 10-0 in first quarter thanks to a fumble that turned into an Erik Gaytan touchdown. But they got momentum on their side after a 53-yard touchdown by Jerreon Dennis. That was followed up by another Dennis rushing touchdown and Junction took a 14-10 lead entering the second quarter.
Sean Rubalcaba capped off the scoring in the second quarter with a 73 yard touchdown run. GJHS went into the half with a 21-10 lead.
Dennis immediately made an impact in the third quarter with a 64 yard touchdown run. The senior running back had four rushing touchdowns on the night and 251 yards. Rubalcaba had six rushes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. At one point, the No. 2 Tigers scored 41 unanswered points.
With the win they will travel to No. 18 Chaparral next Saturday at 1 p.m.
