GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Tied 14-14 at the half, the No. 1 Tigers came out of the locker room looking like a different team. Grand Junction scored three minutes into the third quarter, and never looked back, defeating No. 6 Montrose 49-21 in a Southwestern League game at Stocker Stadium on Friday.
The Tigers (7-0, 2-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a Jerreon Dennis 39-yard touchdown run and a 6-yard touchdown pass from Sean Rubalcaba to Justin Whiting.
The Indians (6-1, 0-1) responded when Drew Casebier found Brenan Woodruff for a 40-yard pick-up. That led to a 1-yard TD by Angelo Youngren. Cameron Jones then intercepted a pass by Rubalcaba, setting up a 23-yard touchdown pass from Casebier to Jones to tie the game at 14-14.
The Tigers scored five touchdowns in the second half: two by Rubalcaba, two by Dennis, and one by Chandon Rose.
Grand Junction will play Fruita Monument next Friday at Stocker Stadium. The Wildcats are also 2-0 in SWL play.
