PREVIEW: GJHS vs. FMHS

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The stage is set for the biggest rivalry in the Grand Valley. Both Fruita Monument and top-ranked Grand Junction enter Friday night's game 2-0 in Southwestern League play.

The Tigers (7-0, 2-0) have barely been tested in their first seven games. Their smallest margin of victory was a 28-14 win over Fountain Fort Carson in late September. GJHS also ranks first in 5A in wildcard points, which determine post-season seeding.

The Wildcats (4-3, 2-0) have won three straight games, all by an average of 36 points. An extremely difficult non-conference schedule slowed the Wildcats to a 1-3 start, but also seems to have paid off considering their success since a 41-7 loss to No. 7 Regis Jesuit. FMHS is 32nd in wildcard points, meaning if the playoffs were determined today, they'd be the last team to make the field of 32 in the 5A playoffs.

Grand Junction won last year's game, in the rain, 28-10, to clinch the SWL title. Friday night's game will likely decide the 2011 Southwestern League championship.
