Cahokia, Ill. (AP) Police departments around the country are looking into ways to reduce operating costs. The checkoff list includes a change in the auto pool.

More forces are converting from the traditional big-horsepower Ford Crown Victoria to alternatives that aren’t gas guzzlers.

Police chief Richard Watson of Cahokia, Illinois, says the four-cylinder Pontiac his officers now use still provides the kick needed for patrolling while also delivering twice the gas mileage.

The police chief in gulf breeze, Florida, wants to go green. He’s applied for a state grant to replace the engines on three of his department’s “Crown Vics” with electric motors.

And five Toyota Camry hybrids are now part of the motor pool at the Salt Lake City police department.
