DELTA, Colo - The 2008 Delta team says things are going to be different this year. So far so good for the Panthers. Delta(1-0) defeated 2A powerhouse Gunnison on Friday night at Panther Stadium 25-20.

For Delta, a 4A school, the competition will only get tougher. They play in the 4A Western Slope League which is one of the toughest football conferences in the state. But Friday's win will build confidence and character.

Delta trailed 14-6 at the half before Corey Hilborne returned the opening kickoff to start the second half 63 yards to the Gunnison 11 yard line. Trent Graff would score from six yards to pull Delta to within two.

Eric West would give the Panthers a chance to take the lead later in the third when he picked off Nic Garcia in Cowboy territory.

Michael Patton put Delta ahead 19-14 with a two yard touchdown run later in that posession.

Gunnison wasn't done. They took the lead back 20-19, missing a two point conversion. But for Delta it was just another test, another chance to come back, another chance to build character. A 4th quarter score would give Delta the lead for good.

Look out Western Slope.
