GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- Winning in the S-W-L is tradition for the boys basketball squad at Fruita Monument High, and so is family.
It all starts with the head coach of the Wildcats. Dave Fox's son, Andy, is an assistant to his father on the Fruita bench. Sitting next to Andy is Butch Thorpe, varsity team assistant coach and J.V. head coach, who is the father of senior guard Zach Thorpe. "It's good to see family and the closeness," said Butch. "Another thing with family," he laughed, "you can say whatever you want."
The first coach-player tandem on the Wildcats was Tom Goff, who still works as an assistant coach for Fruita, and his son Steve Goff. Steve played on the team in 2009-2010 that started the winning streak in the SWL.
The family lineage doesn't end with the coaches either. Starting point guard for the Wildcats this year, Cody Daniels is the younger brother of former-Wildcat Tyler Daniels. "He was an idol for me to look up to and a role model," Cody said of his brother.
Maybe it's the family roots that have enabled the Fruita boys to win 25 straight league games. The more evident answer, however, seems to be the intra-family competition that breeds from within the Wildcat team. Check out our video to find out what we mean.
