Haz Mat: Fluid found in car near Whitewater not toxic, driver released

WHITEWATER, Colo. (KKCO) - Grand Junction Fire Department Hazardous Materials officials say liquid found inside bottles in a car near Whitewater isn't toxic, but aren't saying exactly what it is.

GJFD Batallion Chief Duncan Brown says just before 2 p.m. Monday the Mesa County Sheriff's Office received a call for a welfare check of a vehicle pulled over near the Gunnison River.

Brown says when deputies arrived they found a person inside the car along with several bottles of an unknown liquid on the front seat. The driver wasn't cooperative with deputies when they asked what the bottles contained so Haz Mat crews were called.

The fluid in the bottles has been deemed not toxic and the case was handed back over to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Lisa McCammon says since the liquid wasn't dangerous the driver was not cited or arrested. No word on why he was difficult with authorities.

Traffic moving through the area as officials worked the scene Monday afternoon. The driver was held at the scene while crews were there.
