GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Mesa County has two confirmed cases of West Nile Virus and health officials say residents need to be vigilant about protecting themselves from the disease.

The Mesa County Health Department says two men in their 30s have been diagnosed with West Nile Virus Fever.

They say last year the first case wasn’t confirmed until mid-September.

Last year we had two cases, one fatal. There were no cases reported in 2008, but prior to that there were cases and fatalities reported every year since 2003.

Wearing insect repellent, protective clothing, draining standing water and staying indoors when mosquitoes are most active are the best ways to avoid the disease.
