MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) - September is National Infant Mortality Awareness Month and Mesa County's Child Fatality Review Team is bringing awareness to the increase in infant sleep deaths in Mesa County with a safe-sleep campaign.
According to the Mesa County Coroner's Office, from 2004-2009, 10 infants less than a year old, have died due to unsafe sleep practices. Sleeping on their tummies, sleeping in an unsafe crib, sleeping in separate rooms from parents and sharing beds with adults are all very dangerous sleep practices for infants.
But officials say these types of deaths are preventable.
"The best things you can do includes putting your child to sleep on his or her back at naps and at night," says Kristy Emerson, spokesperson with Mesa County Health Department.
Officials also recommend parents sleep separate from their babies and keep soft objects, toys and loose bedding out of your baby's sleep area.
Also place your baby on a firm sleep surface, avoid letting your baby overheat during sleep and think about using a clean, dry pacifier when placing your baby down to sleep.
