FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) - A Fruita man who dedicated his life to helping children was tragically killed in a car crash Thursday night.
John Fullmer III was a little league football coach and board member for the Mesa County Junior Football Association. He was on his way to practice when his life was cut short.
According to Colorado State Patrol, Fullmer was driving eastbound on Highway 340 Thursday evening when he started to veer off the road. As he tried to get back on the road, they say he over-corrected and his pickup truck rolled.
Troopers say he was not wearing his seatbelt when the crash happened, and as a result he was ejected from the truck. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Sadly, this is not the first time the Fullmer family has been left mourning after a fatal crash. Fullmer's son, John Fullmer IV, was killed in 2009 in a crash along Highway 6 & 50. He and the driver, Jesse Reed, got into the car after a night of drinking.
John Fullmer III used that experience to speak out against the dangers of drinking and driving.
Authorities say drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in his death.
Jim Bratcher, president of the Mesa County Junior Football Association, says grief counselors will be on hand at school Friday to help his players and others who knew him deal with the loss. He also tells 11 News there will be a moment of silence to honor Fullmer before all of the games at Canyon View Park.
