GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Two local couples have teamed up to provide Grand Junction residents with a sober ride home. It's a creative approach that not only gets you home safe, but your car as well.
Had too much to drink? Zingo will get you and your car home safe.
“They call us, we show up wherever they’re at,” says Josh McGuire, co-owner of Zingo Grand Junction.
The designated driving service, new to Grand Junction, already has bar patrons buzzing.
“It's really unexpected. People love the idea,” says McGuire.
Launched first in Italy and now reaching the states, a Grand Junction couple saw the scooter at a wedding in South Dakota and thought it was genius.
“First thing we thought was, why doesn’t Grand Junction have a service like this? And for the past year and a half, we've been working diligently to try and get it here,” says McGuire.
Now with two couples on board and two Di Blasi scooters in the bag, Zingo is revving up Grand Junction.
“They're yelling for us. It's really been an awesome response,” says McGuire.
The Zingo boys arrive in their orange get–ups.
“We ride with these turtle backpacks. Their actually a spine protecting backpack, so it's a hard shell,” says McGuire.
But the backpack also serves another purpose.
“We carry a leak proof bag that we actually wrap our scooters up in,” says McGuire.
The 65 pound scooters fold up small enough to fit in the truck of a smart car.
“Put that in the trunk of someones vehicle and we drive their vehicle home safe,” says McGuire.
Then they take the scooter out of the trunk and zing home,130 miles to the gallon.
“Their 49.9 cc's so we're able to be on the road, but we don't necessarily at to have a motorcycle license,” says McGuire.
The Zingo crew has their own insurance and a contract with the Ale House. That's where you'll typically find them puting around Friday and Saturday nights.
“Well there's always been a challenge for availability for rides home at those later hours, so extra availability works out wonderful for us. Everybody loves it,” says Brian Oliver, general manager of Ale House.
And if you're drinking at the Ale House they'll pay for the orange crew to take you home.
“Contact one of our employees, we'll call them for you and they'll meet you at the door,” says Oliver.
Zingo has really taken off in the few weeks that it's been in Grand Junction and the Zingo crew say in the next year it's going to get even bigger.
“Come spring time we hope to have eight scooters and be in more locations at a time,” says McGuire.
So remember next time you drink, don't wing it, zing it.
Zingo designated driving service is also available by reservation and also for special occasions. Just call 256-ZING.
