Grand Junction Meeting: Drilling Near Rulison

The debate is heating up over gas drilling around a former nuclear blast site.

In Grand Junction yesterday, some state regulators disagreed with federal officials and said natural gas development around Rulison may not be such a good idea.

A new study by the Department of Energy says if a well is drilled there's little risk of radioactivity being released.

A nuclear weapon was detonated about 8,400 feet below ground in 1969 to free natural gas.

The well did produce some gas but it was too radioactive to sell.

The area near Battlement Mesa is in the heart of Western Colorado's natural gas boom and companies are drilling closer to the site.
