FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) - Some cutting edge technology that can help reduce America's dependence on fossil fuels is being conducted right here on the Western Slope.
Colorado State University, Colorado Mountain College and the City of Rifle are all working together to research new ways to produce bio-fuel.
The new study will focus on grass. The second generation bio-fuel is predicted to be cleaner burning and cheaper than conventional gasoline and more powerful than current bio-fuel.
"First generation was corn and grain and this will be grasses and the project here will look at different types of grasses to see which grass combos are going to work best in our area," says Professor of Crop Sciences for Colorado State University Dr. Calvin Pearson.
The second generation fuel will not compete with food production like grain fuel does. Another added bonus is that there will be no conversion needed to current vehicles to be able to use the fuel.
