The DeBeque Town Council and residents of DeBeque are trying to stop an oil and gas waste facility from being built just outside of town.
A project proposed by Pond Leasing LLC, would put a waste water facility on 40 acres of land just outside of DeBeque. Concerns include whether the town has the infrastructure to handle more of these ponds and whether it has the resources to clean up a potential spill.
Waste water is drilling fluid that is shown to often contain cancer causing chemicals, and residents are concerned it could be dangerous for some homes located less than 600 feet from the proposed site.
The DeBeque water storage facility will go before the Mesa County Planning Commission on October 25th, the public is invited to voice opinions on the waste pit.
