Deadly Infections Slipping Through the Cracks

By  |

After a local high school student contracts the deadly Staph Infection MRSA, people are taking a closer look at how widespread the disease is.

According to the center for disease control more than 100,000 Americans are infected by MRSA every year, and one out of five don't survive. These numbers may be skewed because they are only an estimate taken from nine metropolitan areas.

Here in Mesa County, MRSA cases are not required to be reported in to the Health Department, making it hard to inform the public about a possibly contagious infection. A common misconception is that MRSA is resistant to antibiotics, but that is only one family of antibiotics it is treatable and preventable.
