Local Travelers Prepare for Holiday Airport Delays

Experts are calling this Thanksgiving travel season the busiest ever. But what does that mean for travelers here in the Grand Valley?

The parking lot at Grand Junction Regional Airport is almost completely full, but airport officials say it's nothing to worry about. They say they don't expect to be any busier during the Thanksgiving weekend than they usually are.

However, holiday travelers may find several things besides local airport traffic that could cause some delays.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service say storm systems will leave quite a bit of snow on the Front Range, which could impact people with connecting flights at Denver International Airport.

"Delays are likely here through Wednesday and into Wednesday night," said NWS forecaster Joe Ramey. "After that, unless you're connecting to flights that go much further east than Denver, the schedule should be back to near normal."

DIA officials predict that 950,000 people will travel through the airport this long holiday weekend. Heavy traffic combined with bad weather could spell bad news for local travelers here on the Western Slope.

"With slowdowns at other airports, we could see travelers delayed here in the Grand Junction area as they try to connect to other airports," said Ramey.

Travel experts say it's important to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to leave, so you can avoid long waits at ticket counters and security checkpoints.
