Five top tips to protect yourself from becoming a victim:
1. Lock your doors
2. Don't leave merchandise or purses in plain view
3. Guard your electronics
4. Watchout if you have a hatchback, make sure to lock it
5. If you shop at night, park near alot of people or in a well lit area
Many retailers are stepping up security but officers say if you do see a crime happening, don't try to approach the suspect, instead dial 911 and give dispatchers as much information as you can.
