Toy drives are underway in Mesa County and charities are making their lists and checking them twice, but this year it's recall lists.
The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots volunteers say toys pulled from the shelves are landing in donation piles. They are sifting through thousands of toys, trying to keep unsafe toys out of the hands of needy children but without more volunteers the charities say they will be cutting it close.
Toys for Tots says it collected 40,000 toys last year and it expects even more this year. It says its double the work checking for faulty toys so it needs double the help.
Charities are also asking you to watch what you put in the donation pile.
Toys for tots says it will start sorting toys next week but some charities have already had to ditch toys because of defects.
The Salvation Army found one toy on the recall list in its first pile.
Charities say they will work day and night to make sure the right toys get into the hands of needy kids in Mesa County.
If you can donate your time to help sort toys, would like to donate a toy or if you are a parent who needs a little help to make Christmas happen for your family this year you can contact either charity:
