A Loma woman accused of stealing more than 350–thousand dollars from a volunteer fire department was formally charged this morning.
Barbara Cowley is charged with theft of more than 15–thousand dollars. Fruita police say Cowley falsified payroll checks and other accounting records when she worked for the Lower Valley Fire District. According to an arrest affidavit, Cowley had been embezzling money since 1997. She is accused of stealing nearly four–hundred thousand dollars from the department.
She'll be back in court to enter a plea in January. If convicted she could face up to 12 years in prison.
