Four children are safe at home after they wandered away from their Orchard Mesa daycare.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says a padlock on the fence in the backyard was accidentally left open at the daycare run out of Victoria Becoat's home.

Deputies say the kids, ages one and a half to three, wandered off just before 2:30pm on Wednesday. The daycare owner found one of the children before they got too far but the other three wandered about a half-mile.

Deputies were calling for canine teams when a friend of the daycare owners, Sean Reid, found the children.

Reid found them in a construction area off of 29 Road near an irrigation ditch that had six inches to two feet of water in it.

He was able to pull the kids to safety and bring them back to the daycare located on Pinehurst Lane.

The sheriff's office is calling the incident an accident.

Deputies say they will review reports to make sure there are no red flags but they say they probably won't file charges. They say the daycare owner did not by any means intentionally neglect the children.

The Colorado Department of Human Services says the home daycare is licensed with the state and has been operating since June 2005.
