A man police believe killed his girlfriend's child is barred from seeing his own children and remains in jail.

32 year old Charles David McEachern is being held in the Mesa County jail on a $500,000 bond.

Today a judge upheld a protection order against him.

He's facing first degree murder and child abuse charges after a year long investigation by the Grand Junction Police Department.

Last month officers arrested McEachern in Jefferson County on a warrant from Mesa County.

The arrest stems from an incident in June of 2006 when a three year old was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital with serious injuries and later died there.

An autopsy showed the child's death was caused by blunt force trauma to the head.

According to an arrest affidavit, the injuries happened at a Grand Junction home where McEachern lived with the child's mother.

He'll be back in court later this month to argue his bond.
