Colorado Springs Mother Held On Suspicion Of Murder After House Fire Kills Daughter, Burns Other Kids

A Colorado Springs woman is in jail on suspicion of murder after a fire at her home killed her 16–month–old daughter and critically injured her four other children.

Police say 25–year–old Maria Darlene Joseph will likely face other charges as well.

Authorities say they found Joseph about a block away from the home as fire fighters were fighting the blaze.

The fire broke out about 10 o'clock Tuesday morning. Four children survived the blaze, including a 3–year–old girl, and three boys, ages 5, 8 and 9. Authorities say the girl and the 8–year–old boy were taken by ambulance to the Children's Hospital in Aurora.

A 16–month–old girl, Ashia Joseph, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Colorado Springs Police Department's violent crimes unit and the Colorado Springs Fire Department are investigating.
