Rebate Tax Scam Alert

By  |

The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers about several new scams involving proposed tax rebates.

Scammers have been contacting potential victims by phone or by email claiming to be I.R.S. employees. They claim the potential victim will be receiving a rebate and ask for personal information, including bank account and social security numbers. This is so the victim may supposedly receive an advanced payment directly to their bank account. Typically, the scammers then use the information for identity theft.

The I.R.S. wants taxpayers to know they do not collect information over the phone and do not send unsolicited emails.

The economic stimulus package passed through the House of Representatives and the Senate is currently reviewing it.
