Durango, Colo. (AP) With nearly 6 feet of snow falling in Durango in just over a month, mounds of snow left piled on roofs have raised concerns about collapse.
Durango Fire and Rescue Authority Spokesman Dave Abercrombie says some structures are on the verge of caving in.
A large vacant metal structure that housed a skating rink in the 1960s collapsed under the weight of the snow yesterday, as did a structure built over a mobile home.
No injuries were immediately reported.
Concerns about the amount of snow on roofs at Fort Lewis College prompted officials to close the campus for the second day in a row Tuesday.
The roof of the old Fine Arts building at the school collapsed under 4 feet of snow on January 19th, 1993.
Last month, the city received 37.78 inches of snow.
So far this month, the city has received 23.2 inches of snow -- surpassing February's average of 14.9 inches.
