Woman Forgives Man Responsible for Making Her an Amputee

A Grand Junction man is sentenced for a DUI crash that left a woman without her hand and part of her arm.

Under a plea deal, 24–year–old Shaun Jessup was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to pay more than $300,000 in restitution.

Police say back in August Jessup was driving drunk when he crashed into an SUV on 28 1/2 Road near the East Gate Shopping Center. The woman driving the SUV, 49–year–old Tamera Duran, lost her hand and part of her arm in the crash.

In court, Duran was visibly upset about Jessup's sentence. She held up her arm for the judge and Jessup to see. Wednesday the Durans and Jessup exchanged words for the first time. Jessup apologized and Tami responded with, " I forgave him. How sad it would be to be in his position, to have done that to someone? My heart goes out to him."

There is a fund for Tami Duran set up at Wells Fargo under "Tami Duran Fund." Tami is also looking for fellow arm amputee's to possibly begin a support group in our area. If you want to get in touch with Tami you can email her at trekweiler2@aim.com
