Dekalb, Ill. (AP) More details are being released about the man who opened fire yesterday at Northern Illinois University -- Where officials now say he took the lives of five people before killing himself.
Earlier, a coroner had said six students were killed. But he now says that number is five -- and that the higher number was the result of confusion over a patient who'd been taken to another county for treatment.
As for the shooter, police say he carried a shotgun to campus inside a guitar case, and also had three handguns with him during Thursday's ambush inside a lecture hall.
They identify him as a former student, Stephen Kazmierczak, and they say he became “somewhat erratic in the last couple of weeks”after stopping his medication.
They’re not saying what medication he'd been on.
Campus police say investigators recovered 48 shell casings and six shotgun shells after the attack. The gunman paused to reload the shotgun after opening fire on the crowd of students in a geology class.
Authorities say two of the weapons, the shotgun and a handgun, were purchased legally less than a week ago. The others are still being traced.
