Us Seeks Transition to Democracy in Cuba

Washington (AP) Even as Cuban lawmakers choose a new president, the Bush administration is calling for “peaceful, democratic change” there.

A statement from Secretary Of State Condoleezza Rice calls on the Cuban government to release political prisoners, respect human rights and start on a path toward “free and fair elections.”

It says the Cuban people should have a chance to become “masters of their own lives.” and it calls on other countries to help the Cuban people with a transition to democracy.

Castro's brother, Raul, is expected to be named president today. He's headed Cuba’s caretaker government for 19 months.
