Arizona senator John McCain's run for the White House is being watched in Vietnam where he spent five–and–a half years in a Hanoi prison.
McCain returned to Hanoi in 2000 with his wife and son and toured the prison where he was held after his plane was shot down in 1967.
"McCain as president would probably draw some new and favorable attention to vietnam and might bump up some of the engagement between our countries." Says Chuck Searcy, veteran and representative for The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
McCain and other veterans - like Senator John Kerry - were instrumental in helping the U.S. normalize relations with Vietnam after the end of the war.
