Red Cross Real Heroes

Grand Junction Fire Station #1 has three shifts; Green, Red and Black. The call came in, when the Green Shift was on duty, that a dog had fallen through ice on a frozen pond. The crew on duty trains regularly for water rescues, including quick moving and cold water. They responded immediately. The Green Shift donned special cold suits and went into the pond to save the dog. This wouldn't be the first dog they had to pull out of a frozen body of water.

A Bernice Mountain Dog puppy ran onto the frozen pond at Canyon View Park and fell through the ice. Once again the Green Unit at Fire Station One responded to the call.

Both dogs made full recoveries. Members of the Green Unit say firefighting is not just a job but a way of life.
