Baghdad (AP) Vice President Cheney is spending the night in Iraq.

It's his second Iraqi sleepover, and he is the highest-ranking U.S. official to do so.

He's marking five years since the U.S.-led invasion began. Cheney says the drop in violence in Iraq has been “phenomenal,” and he hailed new legislation that is meant to keep Iraq on a democratic path.

But he acknowledged a lot of difficult work lies ahead as the U.S. troop death toll climbs toward 4,000.

Cheney says it would “a mistake now to be so eager to draw down the force” and risk putting the outcome in “jeopardy.” the vice president brushed off the Iranian president's recent visit to Baghdad and said it was not widely discussed at his meetings with
Iraqi leaders.
