Loma Woman Sentenced For Stealing From Volunteer Fire Department

A Loma woman accused of stealing more than $350,000from a volunteer fire department was sentenced Wednesday.

A Mesa County Judge sentenced Barbara Cowley to eight years in the department of corrections and five years probation.

Cowley falsified payroll checks and other accounting records when she worked for the Lower Valley Fire District.

Cowley's sentence also includes paying the fire department and its insurance company more than $374,000.

Cowley pleaded guilty in January. She had been embezzling money since 1997, and had worked for the Lower Valley Fire District from 1972 until May of 2006.
