Grand Junction, Colo. (AP) A teenager said his attempt to steal guns from a sporting goods store was part of a plan to pay off restitution for stealing a gun in a previous case.

Broc Riddle, 16, was sentenced Friday to a four-year deferred sentence on a felony burglary conviction. Riddle and another teenager were taken into custody by a SWAT team Nov. 12 after a four-hour standoff at Gene Taylor's Sporting Goods.

Riddle told Mesa County District Court Judge Thomas Deister that what he did was a stupid decision and was wrong.

District Attorney Pete Hautzinger says they were lenient with Riddle because of his strong academic performance while in youthCorrections, his parents' plan to rehabilitate him, and a letter of apology to the store owner.
