French Leader Considers Olympic Boycott

Paris (AP) French president Nicolas Sarkozy says China needs to understand that there is “worldwide concern” about the situation in Tibet.

Sarkozy said today that if China continues its crackdown in Tibet, he would not rule out a boycott of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Violent protests in Tibet are forcing human rights campaigners to re-examine their approach to the August Olympic Games.

Sarkozy says he has told the Chinese president of his concern, asking for restraint, dialogue and the end of violence in Tibet.

He also disclosed contacts between his office and that of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader.

The French president has come under increasing pressure to take a stance on the violence.
