Montgomery, Ala. (AP) Former Alabama governor Don Siegelman has an invitation to testify before congress.

The once-popular democrat is due to be released from fderal prison today so he can appeal his corruption conviction.

Siegelman began serving a sentence of more than seven years last June on his conviction on six bribery-related counts and one obstruction count.

Siegelman has maintained that certain Republicans targeted him after he was elected governor in 1998.

A federal appeals court ordered Siegelman released, just hours after the house judiciary committee announced it wants to hear his claims of selective prosecution. The panel has begun reviewing the case as part of a broader investigation into allegations of
political meddling in federal prosecutions.
