Deputy Foils Suicide Attempt, Then Crashes To Avoid Pedestrian

Fort Collins, Colo. (AP) Larimer county authorities say a deputy saved the life of a man trying to commit suicide and then crashed his cruiser to avoid hitting a pedestrian all in the same shift.

Sheriff's Spokeswoman Eloise Campanella says Deputy Greg Hibler was treated and released Monday after his cruiser collided with a lamppost and a tree at about 2:45 a.m.

Campanella says a pedestrian had stepped in front of Hibler's vehicle but wasn't hurt. A police dog named Griffin was in Hibler's vehicle but also appears to be unhurt.

Earlier, Hibler was sent to check on a man in Wellington who had slashed two arteries in a suicide attempt. Sheriff Jim Alderden credits Hibler with saving the man's life by stopping the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

The man survived. Hibler went to the hospital to be checked for blood pathogens.
