Lawmakers Focus On More Children In Preschool, Kindergarten

Denver (AP) Colorado legislators want to put tens of thousands of 4- and 5-year-olds in preschool and kindergarten next year under the School Fnance Act.

A bill up for consideration would increase per-pupil funding to $5,250 to keep up with inflation and population increases.

Lawmakers also want to allow for 22,000 more 4- and 5-year-olds to enroll in preschool and kindergarten over six years. Democratic Representative Jack Pommer of Boulder says helping children when they are young is the best way to improve education.

Legislators also want to provide more money for students in residential programs, including treatment facilities or other licensed by the department of human services for students with special needs.
