Fort Collins Police Identify Suspects in 1998 Slaying

Fort Collins, Colo. (AP) One man is in custody and an arrest warrant has been issued for another in connection with the 1998 beating death of a transient in Fort Collins.

Police say 56-year-old Frank Webb was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder Tuesday night at his home in Muscatine, Iowa.

A warrant has been issued for 46-year-old David Lee Griffin, who is in a Pennsylvania state prison for an auto theft conviction. Griffin also faces a first-degree murder charge.

Webb and Griffin are suspects in the death of Gary Martin Birks, whose body was found under a railroad bridge in September 1998.

Police say Webb and Griffin became suspects after the investigation was reopened in 2006.

Both men are awaiting extradition.
