Pentagon (AP) The commander of U.S. troops in Iraq says he's “honored” that President Bush will nominate him to head U.S. Central Command.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he doesn't anticipate any Capitol Hill obstacles to army general David Petraeus' confirmation by the senate.
The senate foreign relations committee chairman, Delaware Democrat Joseph Biden, said his hope is that Petraeus “does not bring an Iraq bias to his new job.”
John McCain has high praise for Petraeus, calling him “one of the great generals in american history.”
Gates told reporters at the Pentagon that Lieutenant General Ray Odierno will be nominated to replace Petraeus in Iraq.
