Afghan Security to be Topic of White House Talks

White House (AP) President Bush will meet with the U.N.'s top envoy to Afghanistan today amid new security concerns in the country.

The talks come just days after an assassination attempt on Afghan president Hamid Karzai. Karzai escaped unharmed from the attack at a Kabul ceremony Sunday. Three people died, and the assault has the Taliban bragging it can strike at will.

White House press secretary Dana Perino says the attack underscores the need to step up security efforts in Afghanistan. The U.S. and NATO have already committed to sending more troops.

Perino says it's unfair to criticize afghan security forces just because insurgents were able to stage an attack. She says the afghan forces have “accomplished a lot.”
