Police rushed to a local church Sunday evening after receiving reports that two men were pointing a gun at its entrance. But when they got there, they discovered that that wasn't quite the case.
Officers arrived at the River of Life Church on 24 1/2 Road just after 6:00 p.m. They say when they got out of their cars, they saw a male carrying a rifle and pumping the chamber.
Officers immediately pulled out their guns, pointed them at the man, and put him in handcuffs.
After questioning him, they learned that he and another teen that was outside with him were members of the church and the rifle he was carrying was actually a BB Gun. The teens told police that they were only trying to get rid of a few prairie dogs who lived out in the field behind the church.
Church pastors say those inside the church knew the two teens were outside and weren't alarmed by their presence. They say it was just a misunderstanding.
"They didn't realize what they were doing was wrong," said David Oldenkamp, Youth Director at River of Life Church. "These guys are not guys who would have done anything maliciously. They learned a lesson tonight the hard way and they won't be doing it again.
Police let the teens go with just a warning and want to remind everyone that it is illegal to fire a BB Gun within city limits.
