Fire Department Calling Rash of Garage Fires Suspicious

The Grand Junction Fire Department is calling four garage fires in just over two hours suspicious.

The first fire sparked just before 3:20 Sunday morning. Crews were called out to a weed fire in the north alley of 1018 White Avenue.
Officials say the small fire spread to a fence and garage, causing minor damage.

Then, just minutes later, crews were called out to the 1200 Block of Ouray Avenue after receiving reports that two garages were on fire.
Officials say they believe the fire started in the garage at 1220 Ouray and quickly spread to the garage at 1230 Ouray, just 3 feet away. Only one person was at home when the fires broke out. He was able to escape unharmed. Officials estimate the two fires caused $40,000 worth of damage.

Finally, fire crews rushed to the 1400 Block of Bunting Avenue around 5:40 a.m. There they found a a large fire burning inside a garage. Officials say when they arrived, the owner of the house was trying to battle the blaze with a garden hose. That man and three other family members were inside the house when the fire started, all got out safely. Damage to the garage and parts of this house is estimated at $50,000.

Officials say the causes of all four fires are under investigation and at this point they are not calling any of them arson. They also say they have no reason to believe the fires are linked at this time, but they are looking into the possibility.
