Los Angeles (AP) Dick Martin is best known as the zany half of the comedy team Rowan and Martin whose show “Laugh-In” took TV by storm in the 1960's.

A family spokesman says the 86-year-old comedian died Saturday of respiratory complications.

Martin went on to become one of television's busiest directors after splitting with Dan Rowan in the late 1970s.

“Laugh-In” offered dazzled viewers an almost stream-of-consciousness run of non-sequitur jokes, political satire and madhouse antics. It made stars of Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin and Arte Johnson, among others.

While straight man Dan Rowan was the voice of reason, Martin veered toward the absurd.
