One lane is now moving on westbound interstate 70 near Parachute after a fatal accident closed the interstate for more than 5 hours.

A white Toyota MR2 struck a blue Honda head on while traveling eastbound on the westbound lanes of I-70 at approximately 1:15 am.

Both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene by the Garfield County Coroner and have not been identified. Alcohol, drugs and speed are unknown contributing factors at this time.

Traffic was diverted onto Highway 6 from Parachute to Debeque during the closure.

The Department of Transportation says clean up from the accident is underway.
