Man Accused of Shooting Pregnant Woman Agrees to 102 Year Sentence

A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her own children has accepted a plea agreement.

Lonnie Herrera faced a Mesa County judge at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday to enter a guilty plea as part of a deal with the District Attorney's Office.

As part of the deal, 39–year–old Herrera pleaded guilty to second–degree murder, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and four other habitual criminal charges. By doing so, the DA will drop all other charges. Under the deal Herrera will serve a total of 102 years in prison consecutively for all of the charges.

According to court records, on March 30, Herrera shot his girlfriend Anna Macias in the neck while two of her four children watched.

She was eight and a half months pregnant. Emergency crews delivered her baby girl, Maria Elena, via c–section. But the baby died two days later. The coroner ruled the death of the baby as a homicide.

Herrera was on parole when he was arrested for beating Macias just two weeks before the shooting. He was able to bond out because there was never a parole hold placed on him.

Herrera will be sentenced at a later date.
