A man is sent to the hospital after he is allegedly hit over the head with an axe handle by his girlfriend's landlord.

Deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office say the victim was trying to help his girlfriend move out when Jake Gallegos hit him in the head with an axe handle.

According to an arrest affidavit, Gallegos admitted to police that he hit the man because he was afraid of him and then threw the weapon in the Colorado River.

A nurse at St. Mary's Hospital told officials the victim suffered several facial fractures and could need surgery.

Gallegos is being held at the Mesa County Jail on charges of second degree assault.
