Oakville, Iowa (AP) Up to 27 levees along the Mississippi River could be breached by rising water in the coming days. It already happened in Gulfport, Illinois, closing the bridge that connects it to Burlington, Iowa.

President Bush tours the region Thursday.

Meantime, officials say Midwest floodwaters are spreading a noxious brew of sewage, farm chemicals and fuel that could sicken anyone who wades in.

Leroy Lippert, chairman of Emergency Management and Homeland Security in Des Moines County, Iowa, warned people to avoid the floodwaters.

In his words, “if you drink this water and live, tell me about it.”
