GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Forecasters at the National Weather Service are calling it the driest year on record. There are 36 days left in 2012, and unless the current weather models change course, the year will go down in history as accumulating the least amount of precipitation since 1850.

This lack of snowfall could be problematic for local ski resorts, but those at Powderhorn Mountain said they've got it covered.

"What we've been trying to do because Mother Nature isn't cooperating with us too much is making snow when ever temperatures are allowing us to," said Powderhorn Maintenance Supervisor Dave Smith.

National Weather Service forecaster Joe Ramey said according to the forecasts he's showing, we are in for a dry couple weeks to come.

"We continue this very dry year that 2012 has turned out to be, and there is no change in sight for the next week or even two weeks," said Ramey.

However, Ramey says according to the climatology indicators he's looking at, the Grand Valley could have stormy December towards the end of the month.

Maintenance crews have been blowing snow for the past couple weeks in preparation for opening day.

Powderhorn Mountain is scheduled to open on time on Dec. 13.
