DENVER (AP) - At $81 a day, Vail and Beaver Creek now have the most expensive lift tickets in the United States. That's $3 more than Aspen and Vail resorts isn't trying to hide it.
Vail CEO Adam Aron says there's a certain cachet to having the top price. If a resort can successfully charge the highest price, he says that may be an indicator that it really is the best vacation experience.
Vail's big-name competitors, from Mammoth Mountain in California
to Stratton in vermont, charge in the low $70's for a single-day peak season ticket. Sun Valley, Idaho charges $69 while Jackson
Hole, Wyoming, charges $73.
Not all skiers are paying those prices since many buy season passes instead of daily lift tickets. Nationwide the ski industry has been in a discounting war since 1999, when some Colorado resorts cut season passes to as low as $300 from their standard rate of $800 or more.
