As temperatures dip into lower temperatures, people begin cranking up their furnaces, but furnaces are a major cause of house fires in the winter. It takes a lot of heat to warm your home, and if something malfunctions, your home can easily catch fire. The Grand Junction Fire Department urges residents to have their furnaces checked this time of year to make sure they are in good working order. That includes checking wires,
filters, and making sure there is nothing close to the furnace that can catch fire. Portable space heaters and wood burning stoves also contribute to house fires in the cold winter months.
It is urged that you make sure that all equipment is installed and working correctly before you use it.
