The Senate today narrowly blocked a republican plan to open Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.
A number of moderate republicans joined the effort to scuttle the legislation, leaving supporters four votes short of getting the required 60 votes needed to block a Democrat–lead filibuster.
Republicans had hoped to win passage by attaching it to a bill containing money for troops and Katrina hurricane victims.
Now the senate will have to re–work the bill to eliminate the oil–drilling proposal.
